Body Treatments

There are many different types of massage, including these common types:

  • Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is the most common type of massage therapy. Swedish massage uses five basic movements to increase circulation and, in theory, remove toxins from muscles. The principle moves of Swedish massage are effleurage, petrissage, tapotement, vibration, and friction. The therapist uses firm but gentle pressure, aided by oil or crème to reduce friction, to compress and relax muscles, always stroking in the direction of the heart.

The benefits of this type of bodywork are wide-ranging and include relief from aches and pains, decreased stress levels in the body, enhanced mental clarity, improved appearance, and greater flexibility.

  • Medical Massage

Medical massage therapy is a systematic therapeutic manipulation, through applying fixed or movable pressure, friction, rubbing, stroking, pinching, tapping, kneading, or applying vibration to muscle and connective tissue. Sometimes a massage is performed on the whole body or just a part thereof, causing movement to that part of the body or sometimes just holding it in a fixed position.

Medical massage therapy is indicated for those with chronic pain, fibromyalgia, arthritis, TMJ dysfunction, migraines, motor vehicle injuries, acute strains, neck and back pain.

Medical massage is performed with the intent of improving conditions or pathologies that have been diagnosed by a physician; a wide variety of modalities or procedures are utilized to focus the treatment based on the diagnosed condition.

  • Trigger Point Massage

Trigger points are located in a taut band of muscle fibers. The trigger point is the most tender in the band. The therapist will locate and deactivate them using finger pressure.

  • Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage uses slower, more forceful strokes to target the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue, commonly to help with muscle damage from injuries. Deep tissue massage is a highly effective method for releasing chronic stress areas due to misalignment, repetitive motions, and past lingering injuries. Due to the nature of the deep tissue work, open communication during the session is crucial to make sure you don’t get too uncomfortable. Keep in mind that soreness is pretty common after the treatment and that plenty of water should be ingested to aid with the flushing and removal of toxins that will have been released from the deep tissue during the session.

  • Sports Massage

Sports massage is similar to Swedish massage, but it's geared toward people involved in sports activities to help prevent or treat injuries. Although, you don’t have to be a professional athlete to have one. Many people who are active and work out often prefer a sports massage. The focus is not on relaxation but on preventing and treating injury and enhancing athletic performance. This massage reduces muscle soreness, increases flexibility and speeds recovery of tight, overworked muscles.

  • Pre/Post Natal Massage

Prenatal massage is used to reduce stress, decrease swelling, relieve aches and pains, and reduce anxiety and depression. The massage is customized to a woman’s individual needs.

  • Aromatherapy Massage

An aromatherapy massage is a form of massage therapy that combines the benefits of aromatherapy with those of massage to promote wellbeing and healing. This form of massage therapy utilizes the aromatherapy essential oils as massaging agents. The added medicinal powers of these oils greatly enhance the efficacy of the massage, for example, rosemary is energizing, chamomile is calming, and lavender & orange eases tension.
